January – Flooring inflation eases
Flooring inflation is easing after a long period of stubbornly high prices in the sector. Latest data from the Office for National for National Statistics (ONS) puts flooring inflation for December at 4.8%, down from 5.7% the previous month, and almost half the figure of 10.5% this time last year.

February – Happy new year for confidence
Retail analysts report “exciting” trends in consumer confidence, including for big ticket items like flooring, with the best headline score for optimism in over two years.

March – Confidence gains stall in February
A rising trend in consumer confidence for big ticket items has taken a knock according to retail anlaysts CfK. February figures for the GfK Major Purchase Index which covers furnishing, flooring and appliances were down 5 points to minus 25.

While UK consumer price inflation marked a small fall in its rate this week and furniture experienced deflation, flooring continued to get more expensive.

June – Container costs back on the agenda
Container costs are back in the headlines for flooring importers with the vinyl sector especially under pressure as a tight consumer market combines with rising freight charges to hit margins.

July – Major purchase confidence jumps up
Consumer confidence in buying big ticket items like flooring jumped up 7 points in July, according to leading retail analysts GfK.

Imports from China rose nearly 10% to £151m in the first six months of 2024.
