January – Retail flooring price inflation eases to 7.8%
Consumer price inflation for flooring eased back in December but is still running hot at 7.8%.
Latest data shows that inflation in retail flooring has backed off 1% since November but the 7.8% result compares to general consumer price inflation in December of 5.4% according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

February – Apprentices to tackle ‘chronic skills shortage’
The UK’s leading flooring contractor has created its own apprenticeship scheme to tackle the “chronic skills shortage” in the industry which has led to a “bidding war” for fitters.

March – Double digit growth for flooring retail in 2021
Despite lockdowns in the first quarter of the year, flooring retailers enjoyed double-digit growth in 2021 as buyers returned to physical locations and invested in their houses.

April – Recofloor reaches major milestone
Recofloor has collected 6,000 tonnes of unwanted vinyl flooring, reducing 7,038 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of removing 1,837 cars off the road for a year.

May – Flooring sales still surging
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that sales in March were 26.8% higher than in February, 155% higher than in March 2021, 160% higher than in March 2020, and 105% higher than March 2019.

June – Free subfloor preparation courses from Mapei

July – Big brands and new names
The Flooring Show will open in just under three months, and exhibitors are getting ready to present fresh, cutting-edge collections of carpets, LVT, rugs, tiles, vinyl, and much more. Anyone working in the sector must attend this event, which will bring together contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers for the largest expo of the year.

August – National Flooring Innovation Awards winners 2022 announced
The National Flooring Innovation Awards winners have been revealed for 2022. The Awards set out to honour and promote the ideas, inventiveness and innovation that push forward the UK flooring sector.

September – 2022 CFJ/CFA Awards wows the industry
Unquestionably the largest event of its type in the flooring industry, the CFJ/CFA Awards, which were held on Friday, September 9 at Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire, and were hosted by nationally renowned comedian Jo Caulfield, stunned the industry. With roughly 500 visitors present, winners were revealed in each of the product and company, installation, and individual categories.

October – The Flooring Show confirms popularity
The Flooring Show reported outstanding attendance for the event last month, despite missing a day of business in observance of The Queen’s burial.
Despite the 60th anniversary exhibition in Harrogate being shortened from a three-day event to just two days due to extraordinary last-minute adjustments, attendance at the event was close to 3,000, which was comparable to prior years.

November – Flooring inflation running high
It was anticipated that inflation in the flooring retail sector would stabilise, but according to the most recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), it increased by over 2% from September’s rate of 7% to 8.7% in October.

December – CFA Guide to Sustainability 2022/23
Richard Catt, the chief executive officer of the Contract Flooring Association (CFA), introduces the 2022 CFA guide to Sustainability. The contract flooring association can be proud of its work to date on sustainability, he says, but there is much more we need to do before we can say with confidence that we have played our full role in the collective effort to avert climate catastrophe.
