Re-opening footfall blown off course
‘Unseasonally poor spring weather blew the retail re-opening off course with an unexpected dip of 6.1% in the number of shoppers returning to the High Street.
According to figures from retail insight company Springboard, the number of shoppers across all retail destinations fell by two per cent last week from the week before. Meanwhile, footfall rose by 2.8 per cent in shopping centres and 1.6 per cent in retail parks.
The UK’s overall numbers contrast with Scotland and Northern Ireland, which enjoyed footfall soaring by 74.9 per cent and 45.7 per cent, respectively.’

Another step forward on the road map
‘This time last year, we were coming out of the first national lockdown, with nearly 80% of construction sites open and the Government well aware of the significant economic value of construction.
Twelve months on, the Prime Minister has confirmed that the latest lockdown restrictions will be eased again from next Monday 17 May, representing ‘a very considerable step on the road back to normality’.
Whilst there are some significant changes, particularly in terms of close contact, anyone who can work from home should continue to do so and there will be minimal impact on construction activities, which should continue to implement the Site Operating Procedures as well as The Use of Face Coverings in Construction during Coronavirus.’

The surge is strong, say our retailers
‘Flooring stores report a strong surge in demand in The Stocklists reader survey taken one month after the re-opening of non-essential retail across the UK. And optimism is running high for the year ahead.
58% of our retailers reported a “strong bounce-back” with another 30% saying there had been a good return to business. None of our respondents said they were disappointed by re-opening sales. The surge doesn’t just mean more business, it means better business according to our survey.
Asked to compare their current trading with the same period in “normal” 2019, more than half said trading volumes were “much better” and a quarter said they were a little better with a similar proportion reporting a similar performance to 2019.’

Domotex to become “industry magnet” in 2022
‘Key European brand manufacturers have expressed their support for Domotex 2022 with one saying the January event in Hannover will be “international industry magnet” after the cancellation of so many trade events in the last year.
Domotex organisers commented: “It is already becoming apparent that the 33rd edition of the world’s leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings will be a strong and innovative event.
“Renowned brand manufacturers from the hard floor coverings segment agree that Domotex must remain the industry and networking platform as the leading international trade show, and that they are teaming up to create an exceptional showcase for the European flooring industry,” it said.’
