Flooring sales fall in February
Despite some recovery in the furniture industry as a whole, flooring sales in February decreased by approximately 1% from the previous year.
The Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) most recent retail statistics shows that February flooring sales fell 0.9% to £215.5 million.

Consumer confidence builds
After a “surprise rebound” in sentiment last month, consumer confidence for large household purchases has remained high, according to prominent retail researchers GfK today.
Following a survey of consumer purchase intentions for furniture, flooring, and home appliances, GfK’s Major Purchase Index increased by four points in March after increasing by three points in February.

Flooring sales increase
According to the most recent retail data from the Office for National Statistics, flooring sales have recovered following a poor start to the year, with March indicating a significant increase.
Retail floorcovering sales in March increased by 28.5% from February to £268.1 million from £208.5 million. However, performance is still mediocre when compared to the same period in the previous year; sales fell by 3.8% from £278.1m to March 2022.

Flooring inflation remains high
According to the most recent information from the Office for National for National Statistics, the price inflation for floorcoverings is still persistently high and above 10% – higher than the rate for the furnishing sector as a whole.
Prices for carpets and other floor coverings climbed by 10.3% in March, somewhat less than the 10.4% increase seen in February but higher than the 7.4% increase seen at same time last year.
